Dan Gurney’s Toyota-powered Eagle Mk III GTP car set the pole in 1993 with a scorching lap of 1:33.875 turned by P.J. Jones around the 3.5-mile road course/oval…while this year’s pole in Michael Shank Racing’s Ligier-Honda P2 was a remarkable 5.3 seconds adrift at 1:39.194.
At 22 years old, IMSA’s Daytona lap record is a glaring reminder of how far some series have come, and how some series have let time pass them by.
